Baptism

Baptism

The Sacrament of Baptism allows us to pass from the state of Original Sin into what is known as the State of Grace in which we are given a share in God’s own life.  By Baptism we become, as St Paul puts it ‘’temples of the Holy Spirit’’

The Sacrament of Baptism is administered by one of the Priests or by the Deacon on Sundays at 11 am – but not on the first Sunday of the month.

Parents must give three months’ notice of their request to baptise their child and must complete a Baptism Registration form (obtainable from the parish office) and must meet with one of the priests.

Parents must be members of Good Shepherd Parish and live within the parish boundaries otherwise they must approach the parish priest of their parish to have their child baptised.

On the weekend prior to the Baptism, the family is required to attend one of the weekend Masses and be presented to the parish.

There is a requirement that at least one of the Godparents must be a Catholic, although only one is required by Church Law.

During the Baptism ceremony, one Godparent holds a lighted candle and a white cloth is laid across the chest of the baby. At the conclusion of the ceremony, a Certificate of Baptism of the child is presented to the parents.
